The global IT industry accounts for two per cent of the world's carbon dioxide emissions - the same amount the world's aviation industry churns out, according to analyst house Gartner.
The estimate is based on the amount of energy PCs, servers, cooling, fixed and mobile phone systems, LANs, office telecommunications and printers all use within the world's offices.

The first federal smog standard was finalized in 1990. Metro Atlanta officially met it in 2005, just as a new standard was taking effect. The improvement was the result of cleaner coal-fired power plants, engines and fuels, as well as bans on outdoor burning and other controls.
The latest change to the federal standard was prompted by scientific studies that show human health is affected at lower levels of smog than previously thought. People with asthma and other respiratory diseases and heart problems, children and the elderly are most at risk when low-level ozone levels spike.
