New Asthma Guidelines Stress Disease Control

"Asthma control is achievable for nearly every patient," Dr. Elizabeth G. Nabel, director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, said during a teleconference.

Nabel stressed that with proper medical care, healthy environments and better informed patients, asthma can be controlled, and people can lead active lives. "As health-care providers and patients, we really should accept nothing less," she said.

They start by calling for a strong emphasis on monitoring asthma. One aspect of that monitoring should focus on the severity of a patient's daily symptoms. Both patients and doctors need to be aware of those daily symptoms.

Stiglitz: U.S. faces economic downturn

Some 1.7 million Americans may lose their homes due to foreclosures and bankruptcy this year, piling further pressure on house prices, he said. Wages have stagnated although the U.S. gross domestic product was some 20 percent higher now from six years ago, he said.

Stiglitz said the credit crunch was a "totally predictable disaster" due to U.S. President George W. Bush's economic policies to cut taxes for the rich even as the Federal Reserve reduced interest rates, which encouraged people to borrow more than they could afford.

XP: Small, Free Way to Use and Mount Images (ISO files) Without Burning Them

Alcohol and Daemon Tools are excellent software packages that allow users to mount ISO files as virtual CD-ROMs. Yes, there is a way to use that ISO without burning it to a disk.

Although I love these tools, Microsoft has a free, 60kb program that does the same thing! Of course, it is not supported... and it's not as friendly as the software listed above; however, it works and it's free.

Teacher turnover leaves void in U.S. schools

The commission has calculated that these days nearly a third of all new teachers leave the profession after just three years, and that after five years almost half are gone - a higher turnover rate than in the past.

Los Angeles has offered teachers signing with low-performing schools a $5,000 bonus. The district, the second-largest in the country, had hired only about 500 of the 2,500 teachers it needed by Aug. 15 but hoped to begin classes fully staffed, said Deborah Ignagni, chief of teacher recruitment

According to the most recent Department of Education statistics available, about 269,000 of the nation's 3.2 million public school teachers, or 8.4 percent, quit the field in the 2003-04 school year.

Thirty percent of them retired, and 56 percent said they left to pursue another career or because they were dissatisfied.

Forget Cygwin and VMware, run coLinux

Until a week ago I would have said that Cygwin was the best available way to hybridize Windows and *nix. I was relatively happy with my xterms and ssh. But that was all that I could use it for. Running X applications compiled for Cygwin was unusably slow. So I had to use VNC to connect to run X11 apps. Well, I no longer have Cygwin on my machine, it has been replaced by Cooperative Linux.

I don't know what rock I've been hiding under for the past two years but I had not heard of Cooperative Linux until a few weeks ago. Cooperative Linux is a recompilation of the Linux kernel as a Windows executable. All of the native posix commands get remapped to the Windows kernel. And it's fast. It's unbelievably fast. Once the kernel is running, it can run native Linux binaries. In other words, you can boot your Debian/Gentoo/*buntu/etc. distribution while in Windows without any binary recompilation a la VMWare or Virtual PC.

Vibha.org - NGO

Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see. India, by one count, has 18 million* street children and over 22 million* child laborers. Nearly 20%** of the children 6-14 years old have no access to primary education. Less than 45%** receive the immunization required to protect them from deadly illnesses. Half the children do not get enough food everyday and are chronically or acutely undernourished. Ask yourself - is this really how your message should read?

Vibha is a movement that empowers you to make a difference. We aim to ensure that every underprivileged child attains his or her right to education, health and opportunity.

From financials sheet:

Total revenue: $486,122
Program services: $373,300
Management and general: $48,854

VMWare Tools

VMWare Tools makes the guest OS far more responsive. VMWare Tools is available for Windows, Linux, Netware and FreeBSD. This was in version 5.5 of tools. The newer version of tools may have Solaris. It would be nice to have Solaris.

VMWare Tools on Windows is straightforward. After installing, enable full hardware acceleration.

VMWare Tools on Ubuntu 7.04

Instructions are provided at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VMware/Tools

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`

sudo ./vmware-install.pl

Everything runs file until this question:

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?
[/usr/src/linux/include]

/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.20-16-generic/include

And then it complains again: The directory of kernel headers (version @@VMWARE@@ UTS_RELEASE) does not match your running kernel (version 2.6.20-16-generic).

As per this entry, modified /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h and added the line:

#define UTS_RELEASE "2.6.20-16-generic"

I guess I'll have to use Ubuntu 6.10

Windows problems - User Profile Hive Cleanup

Programmers come in all shapes and sizes so far as knowledge, ability,
experience, ability, creativity, ability, skill (did I already mention
ability?), ability, and, oh, yes, ABILITY. One of the many things
programmers are SUPPOSED to do when closing their application is clean-up.
Clean-up covers a lot of things and often something is overlooked. That is
why we have Beta testing and bug reports and all those wonderful things us
users must deal with. It seems that SOME programmers do not concern
themselves with such trivial matters as releasing memory back to the system
when their program ends, or closing the registry, or releasing hive usage,
or any one of many things. Hence our problem with the registry hive.

With each new evolution of Windows the system register has grown in
complexity and size. Now it is so large it is divided into "Hives." In my
experience with my many customers (and you) using Windows since NT came out,
this problem (the open profile) has existed. Now that UPHClean is
available, I have normally seen it reporting, as culprits, add on programs.
Interestingly, the hive problems seem to be caused by Microsoft programmer
written applications. So, whenever I find the hive problem in my customers'
Events file, I install this tool to ensure they have fewer registry
problems.

So, what can you do? Nothing to do. The "work around" to the open user
profile issue is solved using the UPHC tool. It has closed the open files,
released the system resources and released the user profile so that the
registry can be closed prior to system shutdown or user logoff. Everything
else is provided For Your Information (i.e.: UPHClean actually worked).
